The Graceful Geese Mercantile has swiftly become a beacon for antique aficionados and artisan craft lovers alike. Since its grand opening on April 1, 2024, this unique marketplace has offered a sprawling haven for those seeking the charm of yesteryears and the craftsmanship of North Carolina's finest artisans. Angie and Ray McGinnis, the community business owners behind this innovative venture, have woven their love for antiques and handmade treasures into a thriving business that not only enriches their community but also supports local creators.
The journey of owners Angie and Ray to establishing The Graceful Geese Mercantile speaks volumes about their passion and determination. Married for nearly 39 years, the couple's shared interest in antiques and quality craftsmanship has long been a part of their lives. It was Angie's relentless search for a vendor spot to sell their overflowing collection of antiques that sparked the realization of a high demand for a marketplace dedicated to antiques and artisanal goods. With Ray's early retirement from a 33-year career at Corning, the couple was poised to embark on a new chapter, transforming their vision into reality.
Initially conceived as an antique store, Angie and Ray's vision for The Graceful Geese Mercantile evolved to embrace a broader spectrum of artisanal excellence. Recognizing the universal appeal of pop-up artisan events, they aimed to create a space that showcases the best of the best artisans alongside a curated selection of antiques and unique vintage finds. Occupying the ground floor of the Hickory Furniture Mart, the mercantile spans an impressive area, accommodating up to 180 vendors and providing them with a platform to share their creations with both the local community and visitors from around the globe.
Reflecting on the inception of The Graceful Geese Mercantile, Angie McGinnis shared, "We had collected so many antiques that when I called six counties to find a place to sell our collection and found everyone had a waiting list, I knew there was a demand for this. So, I told Ray this is what we need to do. It quickly became a vision of our next chapter." This realization marked the beginning of their journey towards creating a vital link for the community's artisanal talents and offering a unique platform for local creators to showcase their North Carolina-made masterpieces to a global audience.
In their quest to populate the mercantile with exceptional talent, Angie and Ray are considering a select group of juried artisans. However, their doors are also open to other local artisans interested in joining this vibrant community. Prospective vendors are invited to set up meetings on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. to learn more about the opportunities available, including space availability and requirements.
The Graceful Geese Mercantile represents a harmonious blend of past and present, where the timeless appeal of antiques meets the innovative spirit of modern artisanal crafts. It's a place where history is cherished, creativity is nurtured, and community ties are strengthened. For Angie and Ray McGinnis, The Graceful Geese Mercantile is not just a business; it's a legacy—a contribution to the cultural tapestry of North Carolina and a testament to the enduring power of passion, vision, and community.
