The Landmark Project
October 1, 2026Sparta Candle Company
I have bought a lot of soap in my life, and I don’t think I have ever been genuinely excited to unwrap a bar of soap until Sparta Candle Co.
Every single time I open one of their Rivers soaps, it makes me happy.
Before you even use it, it feels like somebody made you a tiny piece of art. The colors swirl through the bar like water and stone and sky. There are little river rocks, shells and details tucked into them. No two ever feel exactly alike. I find myself turning them over in my hands and looking at them before I ever take them into the shower, which is an absurd amount of emotional investment in a bar of soap, but here we are.
And then you actually use it.
That is the part that keeps me buying it.
My skin feels so much better when I use Sparta soap that the difference is honestly startling. It lathers beautifully without feeling like it is stripping everything off your skin. When I rinse it away, my skin feels clean, obviously, but also soft and comfortable. Not tight. Not dry. Not coated in some weird residue. Just really, really good.
There are plenty of beautiful handmade soaps in the world that are mostly beautiful handmade objects. These are not that. The art is almost a bonus because underneath all of those gorgeous colors and little handcrafted details is an extraordinarily good bar of soap.
And I think that is why I love the Rivers collection so much. Each one feels like opening a tiny present. You unwrap it and discover another little landscape. New River feels warm and sunlit. Little River feels cool and quiet and woodsy. Carolina feels like salt air and open sky. They don’t just slap a regional name on a scent and call it done. The whole bar feels considered.
I genuinely get a little burst of happiness every time I open a new one. Then I get another one every time I use it because my skin feels fantastic. That is a pretty remarkable accomplishment for soap.
